The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan is the fifth and last installment of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Percy Jackson is a half-blood teenager, son of Poseidon, god of the sea. He and his friends are trying to stop the Titans, lead by Kronos, from taking over Mount Olympus. The story takes place in the modern era, and Mount Olympus has moved to the Empire State Building in Manhattan, where it resides on the 600th floor.
Kronos, who had been trapped in the Underworld, comes back to the world of the living when he reincarnates into the body of Percy’s former friend Luke, the son of the messenger god Hermes. Luke/Kronos is convinced he must destroy Olympus in an act of vengeance, and to this end, has been growing his army by gathering monsters to fight alongside him. Disillusioned demigod children and demons have also joined Luke’ ranks. He seeks to destroy the gods with Olympus to usher in a new age filled with chaos. He does not just plan to attack Olympus—he launches a simultaneous attack on Poseidon and the sea, releasing Typhon, a monster stronger than any other. Meanwhile, Hades is brooding in the Underworld, angry with Zeus for killing the mother of his children, and refuses to join the fight. With Poseidon, Zeus, and Hades—the three brothers and main gods of Olympus—separated, Luke believes his success is assured. The gods leave Olympus to battle Typhon, leaving it unprotected from the army looking to destroy it.
